How Much to Tip in Every Situation

When working for tips it can be heart-rending when people just aren’t sure how much to tip. A lot of places pay a very small amount per hours, usually less than minimum wage, and leave you to live off the tips. Here is the bottom line on tipping in every situation.
Waiters
It’s sad that there aren’t more people who appreciate the job that a good waitress or waiter does. They are there to make your meal experience as pleasant and hassle-free as possible. Most good tippers are the ones who either love flaunting their money, or people who have been waiters or waitresses at one time themselves. Some people really don’t mean to under-tip, they simply don’t know good tipping etiquette. It’s just a part of life that many waiters and waitresses have to deal with. Even if it’s the worst service you’ve had, never leave without giving a 15 percent tip. Even if you probably would have tipped more if you had enjoyed the service, don’t go below that line.
Restaurant Deliveries
Delivery people are in the same boat. When someone brings you a pizza or a package, they expect a decent tip for their time, effort, and gas. They are working for a living just like anyone else, they just have a system of payment that is nothing but a headache. Who would design such system? If it is bad weather out, maybe a bit more is appropriate, but around $2 to $4 is good.
Baristas
High tippers try to tip 20 percent, but many stay within the 17 to 20 percent range. You may expect to tip more if you ordered a really complicated drink, but this range is good.
Cab Drivers
If they got you there and it wasn’t a long way, then a good tip is appropriate. If they made nice conversation, or even if they stayed quiet, if that’s what you like, tip them a few dollars. Gauge it on how the trip went for you.
Apartment Doormen
Usually these tips should be reserved for Christmastime. However, it depends on each situation. If they help you with a lot of bags, it should count for something.
Valet Parker
This is usually just a $2 tip. It really adds up if they park a lot of cars. Some big tippers like to throw them a five-spot, which is fine if that’s how they feel about it.
Hair/Nail Salon
If you enjoy the company and the job, then 15 percent to 20 percent should be fine. This is relaxing work and not so demanding. Of course, that depends on the client.
The main thing to remember about tipping is to stay within an average range. Only go higher or lower depending on what kind of service you experience. If you stay within 15 to 20 percent, and use some judgment on higher or lower, you are going to come out all right most of the time.
