Non-Awkward Ways to Start a Conversation with a Girl
There are a lot of incredibly awkward ways to start conversations with girls that are almost certain to get you shut out way before you can even think about asking for her number. The good news is that there are also a lot of great ways to start a conversation with a girl that will actually go somewhere and be enjoyable for both of you.
What Not to Do
First of all, let’s go over a couple things you should never do when looking to start a conversation with a girl.
The most important thing is to never use a pickup line. Chances are pretty good that she’s heard them all and also been turned-off and annoyed by all of them. They will not get you anywhere.
Do not start with a controversial topic. You may be passionate about politics or religion, but that doesn’t mean she is. And if she is, she might be on the opposite side of the debate as you. Any topic that sparks controversy is OFF LIMITS. Don’t even go there. It’s not worth the risk.
What to Do
Here are some simple ways to start a conversation with a girl. It’s a lot easier than you think.
Most importantly, be yourself. After all, if this ends up going somewhere, you don’t want to surprise her with your real self later down the road. Plus, most girls are great at spotting fakes and don’t like being deceived. So always just be your real self.
The next thing you want to do is slow down. You are not asking this girl to marry you or (hopefully) head back to your hotel room immediately. At this point, all you are doing is starting up a conversation, just like you have with hundreds of other people throughout your life. Relax and realize that this is not a big deal. She’s just as human as you are.
Make her laugh. Girls, like guys, love to laugh and have fun. So, look up a few ridiculously simply but funny jokes and take some time to memorize one or two and just go for it. Even the dumbest joke can be a great ice breaker. If you have a bad habit of telling the punch line wrong, take a few seconds to look around wherever you are and find something funny to point out. It could be the lyrics of a song that is playing or the wording of a song.
Ask her a question. Maybe it’s just to get the time or what time the bar closes, but asking a quick question is a great way to ease into a conversation. But, be ready with a follow-up question or that will be the end of it. Perhaps you left your phone in your car because you wanted to spend more time looking up at the world around you.
Compliment her. Girls often put more work into their appearance than guys realize, and love it when a guy notices. Before approaching her, take a moment to study her and find something non-sexual that you really like about her. Maybe it’s her clothes or the way her hair is braided. If her hair is done in an interesting or unique way, ask her how she did it and then talk about how impressed you are that she did it herself, since you know you wouldn’t be able to create such a masterpiece.
Above all, remember that starting a conversation with a girl doesn’t have to be a big rehearsed thing. It can be as simple as saying “Hi. How are you doing today?”
